Oklahoma State Staff Joins Others For Career Development

Oklahoma State offensive coaches are in Houston this week meeting with the staffs from Houston and Clemson, while the Cowboys defensive coaches are trying to gain knowledge from the Temple and Georgia Tech staffs.

It is not unusual this time of year for college football staffs to get together and exchange ideas, and use the opportunity for career development. Oklahoma State's coaches have done this almost every year since Mike Gundy became head coach.

Some times they have hosted and other times they have gone on the road. Most of the time the Oklahoma State staff has met with other college coaching staffs, but on a couple of occasions they have gone and met with NFL staffs on their turf. This year the Cowboys coaches packed their suitcases and the offensive coaching staff headed to Houston and the defensive staff went to Atlanta.

Offensive coordinator Mike Yurcich, running backs coach Marcus Arroyo, wide receivers coach Kasey Dunn, offensive line coach Joe Adkins and Cowboy backs coach Jason McEndoo met with both the University of Houston staff and the offensive coaches from College Football Playoff runner-up Clemson.

Defensive coordinator Glenn Spencer and his staff, including defensive line coach Joe Bob Clemons, safeties coach Dan Hammerschmidt and cornerbacks coach Tim Duffie, were in Atlanta at Spencer's alma mater Georgia Tech. Joining the Cowboys and the Yellow Jackets is the defensive staff from Temple.

All the combinations make sense with Houston and Clemson employing similar but in some ways different varieties of the spread offense. Defensively, Georgia Tech uses a similar hybrid linebacker and safety in its multiple 42 or 43 defensive front and Temple uses more of a 4-3-4 with some variations.
