GoPokes TV: Is Doug Gottlieb A Candidate?

Mike Holder is proud that Doug Gottlieb is an Oklahoma State graduate and is a great representative of the university. But the OSU athletics director did everything but dismiss Gottlieb as a candidate for the vacant head basketball coaching job.

Mike Holder was asked Saturday morning if Doug Gottlieb, the former Oklahoma State point guard, will be considered to replace Travis Ford as head coach of the Cowboys. The OSU athletics director did everything but dismiss Gottlieb without dismissing him as a candidate.

Gottlieb has never coached but he is the son of a longtime coach, the late Bob Gottlieb, who was an assistant coach at Creighton under Eddie Sutton before becoming a head coach. The 40-year-old Gottlieb is currently a college basketball analyst and national radio host for CBS Sports.

“I mean really, if you’re a Cowboy how could you not like him?” Holder said while visiting with a select group of media members who have covered OSU basketball. “I’m so proud of what he’s done, been able to accomplish, and the image he presents for our institution. Every time he’s on the radio or the television, I mean what a great representative for [Oklahoma State].”

Gottlieb transferred to OSU from Notre Dame, playing two seasons (1998-99 and 1999-2000) for the Cowboys under Eddie Sutton. He was an outstanding point guard during his two-year playing career, leading the nation in assists (8.8) as a junior. He still holds nearly all of OSU’s assist records.

“He loves our university, and he loved his time here,” Holder said. “His wife’s from Drumright, and he wants to raise his family in Stillwater. I’ve heard it all. And who wouldn’t get excited and fired up about that? But I tell my wife all the time, ‘Robbie, he hasn’t coached a game.’ Now she’ll point out neither did Fred Hoiberg or Steve Kerr, she knows the list of all those people.

“But I think it’s important for us to be rational about how we approach this. Would he be considered? Why not? But I think the kicker for him is you’ve got to get over the fact that he’s never coached a game. That’s huge.”
