Scout Now: Can The Cowboys Win 10 Again?

Oklahoma State won 10 games a year ago, and Cowboys fans are wondering if 10 wins is a realistic goal again in 2016.

I know what the expectations will be for the Oklahoma State Cowboys. Anytime you return a quarterback as talented as Mason Rudolph and some explosive wide receivers like James Washington, Marcell Ateman, Jhajuan Seales, and Jalen McCleskey, and the kind of talent the Pokes have on defense, then expectations will be high. The media is likely to make Oklahoma State a darkhorse candidate (behind Oklahoma and Baylor) to win the Big 12 Conference.

So far this spring there are signs of a really successful season for next fall, but then there are those continued concerns. I’d love to tell you that the offensive line is much better, but the truth is some practices they do look improved and some they look a lot like last season.

Offensive line coach Greg Adkins says the continuity of having all the starters back and a key newcomer in Larry Williams combined with some young players showing signs of pushing for playing time help. Everybody knows what is expected. They all know very clearly what Adkins expects. There are signs of some competition for playing time.

“When you start to have a solid second group and they are playing better then those starters start looking behind them a little bit to see how good those guys are getting and making sure they have their job,” Adkins said.

There is more to it than just the offensive line. The running backs need to improve. Every player needs to improve if this team is going to approach the 10-win mark and even think of climbing over that hurdle and also taking an SEC or other top power five conference opponent in a bowl game and smacking them around.

It would be nice to promise an even better season in 2016, and it is possible but it is not in clear view yet this spring.
