Scout Now: Who's The Most Explosive Cowboy?

James Washington has impressed Cowboys fans in his first two seasons but his explosiveness and big-play ability could lead to bigger and better things in 2016.

If you are looking for the most explosive and most days during spring practice the most noticeable Cowboy then look no further than number 28 and the pride of Stamford, Texas – James Washington.

The former football, basketball, baseball, track, and tennis prep standout at Stamford High School has fully introduced himself to Oklahoma State fans. He hasn’t said much but his actions with 81 receptions for 1,543 receiving yards and 16 touchdowns in two seasons rank him just outside the top 10 in both catches and receiving yards. He is already 10th in touchdown receptions and he has two years to go.

Has the small town Texan with the big time athletic ability already been an overachiever in the eyes of his head coach? Well, Mike Gundy liked what he saw in recruiting Washington but he does think there were some recruiting gurus that didn’t see Washington being nearly as good as he has turned out to be.

"I'm not sure anybody really knew just based on being from such a small community, but he's very athletic just as we talked about,” Gundy said. He was a multi-sport player. I was really excited when I watched him play a basketball game and he followed a missed shot and tried to dunk it with one hand, but he missed the dunk; but at least his elbow was above the rim. I would agree that he has exceeded expectations and what the recruiting services thought at that time."

If Washington just doubles what he did his first two seasons, and the expectation is he will do so much more, then he will rank sixth all-time on receptions behind the names Woods, Blackmon, Dykes, Stewart, and D’Juan Woods. He will be fourth in receiving yards behind Woods, Blackmon, and Dykes. In touchdown receptions he would climb to third behind just Woods and Blackmon. That’s just if he double his freshman and sophomore seasons!
