Hargis Offers Thoughts On Big 12 Meetings

Oklahoma State President Burns Hargis shares his thoughts on the Big 12 and the state of the OSU athletic program.

For the first time that we know of since coming back to Stillwater from last week's Big 12 Meetings in Irving, Texas, Oklahoma State President Burns Hargis spoke with a media outlet as he did a 22-minute radio interview with your's truly on Triple Play Sports Radio.

Hargis spoke of what a strong year it has been for the Oklahoma State athletic department, how serious he takes it, and how proud he is of the Oklahoma State programs and coaches doing things the right way in the face of the stories coming out of Baylor and Mississippi among others.

The primary topic was the Big 12 Meetings and he seemed very upbeat on the state of the Big 12 Conference, the way the CEOs of the schools, the Board of Directors worked together, and the information and direction provided by Big 12 Commissioner Bob Bowlsby, a hire that Hargis was the point man on, and the outside consultants brought in to provide information on issues such as expansion, holding a conference championship game in football, and a conference network for third tier television inventory.

Hargis hit on all those points in our discussion.

He also told us that he likes where Oklahoma State is situated. He agreed with comments we told him were made the night before by head football coach Mike Gundy that Oklahoma State has secured its place in the power conference level, whether it is Big 12 or some other league in the future.

He said the league did a research on the value of each school's athletic department and Texas finished first, Oklahoma a close second, and Oklahoma State a close third. That is very reassuring knowledge to have for the future.
