If you drove down Hall of Fame Avenue in Stillwater today and looked over at the Sherman Smith Training Center and adjacent practice field during the normal late afternoon when you see the Oklahoma State Cowboys out there practicing, well, today you saw nothing.
No, the team hasn't been working so well that Mike Gundy and the staff gave them the day off. Instead, the cold front weather we had last week and some over the weekend producing highs in the 80s had Gundy concerned. The forecast for this Saturday is right around 90 for a high.
Today, Gundy moved practice inside Boone Pickens Stadium, which as fans know unless there is a nice breeze in the air the heat and steam can just sit in that stadium and produce a sauna-like effect. Those were the conditions this afternoon along with the heat coming off the turf. The team got a good dose of exactly what the conditions are supposed to be like on Saturday during the near two and a half hour practice today.
This was a heavy work day with a lot of work on kickoffs and kickoff returns and some work on two-minute drills at the end of the practice. The Cowboys will be back outside on Wednesday, back in the stadium for Thursday's extensive walk-through, and then it's time to get ready for Saturday's kick-off.
