Coming off the 82-75 upset win on the road at No. 7 West Virginia on Saturday there was an individual honor passed out on Monday for his work in both of Oklahoma State's wins last week. Freshman guard Lindy Waters III was named the Big 12 Co-Newcomer of the Week after helping the Cowboys pick up a pair of road wins at Oklahoma and No. 7 West Virginia.
A perfect 5-of-5 from 3-point last week, Waters gave the Cowboys the lead with 4:36 to play with a 3-pointer from the right of the key at Oklahoma, and his 3-pointer from the left of the key at No. 7 West Virginia pushed the OSU lead to five with 3:08 remaining.
"It's all about team right now," Waters said to media on Monday afternoon. "It's nice to get an individual honor but right now I just want to do whatever it takes to help the team win."
Hitting 3-pointers was just that in the two wins last week.
"I'm happy for Lindy because he missed so much time with the concussion thing and it's good to see him back and contributing," head coach Brad Underwood said and also added that with this freshman class picking up this honor so frequently it really bodes well for the future of the program.
Waters plays with composure well beyond his age, which is evidenced by his 6-of-7 (.857) shooting performance last week. He had 11 points at the rival Sooners and six points at West Virginia, but turned the ball over just once during the week.
Waters shared the Newcomer of the Week award with TCU's Alex Robinson. Deonte Burton of Iowa State was named the Player of the Week.
Waters is the third Cowboy to take home a Big 12 weekly award this season. He joins two-time Big 12 Player of the Week Jawun Evans (Dec. 5 and Jan. 30), as well as freshman point guard Brandon Averette, who was named the league's Newcomer of the Week on Dec. 12.
