The Hattiesburg-American newspaper has reported that they have confirmed what Go Pokes reported as being likely and that is John Wozniak being hired by Oklahoma State head coach Mike Gundy as the new running backs coach for the Cowboys.
Wozniak has all kinds of connections to Oklahoma State in that he served as an offensive graduate assistant during 2004 under Les Miles and when Gundy was the offensive coordinator. Wozniak left with Miles and was on the LSU staff as an offensive quality control coach. Current Cowboys offensive line coach Josh Henson was also on that LSU staff. Later, Wozniak was an assistant at Montana State where current OSU Cowboy backs coach Jason McEndoo was serving as offensive line coach.
Our guess is that he was recommended by former Oklahoma State offensive coordinator Todd Monken, who hired Wozniak to Southern Miss in 2013 when he was head coach. Oddly enough, Wozniak replaces another former Monken assistant at Southern Miss in Marcus Arroyo, who left Oklahoma State last week to go to Oregon as the co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach.
Here is a list of all the stops that John Wozniak has made prior to Southern Miss and his stop before USM, which was at Alabama during the Tide's 2012 National Championship season as he served in an off-the-field analyst role on offense.
Wozniak was the running backs coach and co-special teams coordinator at UAB for the 2011 season. Wozniak has been on the staffs of several successful programs since he began his coaching career in 1999. In 2010, Wozniak served as offensive coordinator at West Georgia. He has also coached at Memphis (2009), Montana State (2008), Georgia Southern (2006), LSU (2005 and 2007), Oklahoma State (2004) and Knox (Ill.) College (1999-03).
Wozniak, like Todd Monken, is a graduate of Knox College in Illinois.
