Recruiting 2018: Jones Likes Cowboys and Hammer

Wayne Jones is not the most talked about 2018 prospect in Oklahoma, but the safety from Owasso showed up well at The Opening Regional. He says he likes Oklahoma State and is bonding with the Cowboys safety coach that is recruiting him.

I saw Owasso safety Wayne Jones last season in a game at Putnam City North and really was impressed. He had good size and was a very active player as the Rams throttled P.C. North that night and Jones was in on several big hits in the game. Interviewing him at Nike's The Opening Regional in Frisco, Texas, Jones was very positive about Oklahoma State and safeties coach Dan Hammerschmidt.

"He is just one of the coolest coaches around," Jones said. "We are building a relationship and when i"m there (at OSU) he is always talking to me and talking to my family."

Jones said that first as I walked by and he was speaking to a reporter that covers recruiting for Arkansas. Jones told me later that Arkansas is a school he is interested in, but he has not heard from the Razorbacks on an offer. I do believe Oklahoma State has offered both Jones and his safety teammate with the Rams in Josh Proctor, who we will have an interview up with in the coming days.

Last season, Jones had 62 tackles, was credited with breaking up 10 passes, three interceptions, and two fumbles caused. The 5-11 1/2 and 193 pound defender had a 4.73 in the forty at The Ford Center at The Star on what is a slower field with a lot of fill material yet to settle into the turf. He had a 4.09 on the 5-10-5 shuttle and a very impressive 35.9 on the vertical jump.

Jones has offers from Arkansas State, Illinois, Kansas State, Memphis, Michigan State, New Mexico, and UTSA.
