For the second time in the 2017 season, sophomore hurler Carson Teel was named the Big 12 Conference Pitcher of the Week, announced by the league office earlier today. The sophomore out of Stillwater was named Pitcher of the Week on March 7th as well.
Teel appeared in three games last week for the Cowboys, and the team was victorious in each of the games. The lefty, while picking up two wins over #4 Texas Tech over the weekend, worked 5 1/3 scoreless innings while recording seven strikeouts.
In the series in Lubbock, Teel made two relief appearances and picked up wins in both outings. In the opener, he threw 1 1/3 innings striking out three. Teel came in in the bottom of the sixth and recorded a strikeout with runners on the corners to end the inning. And then in the seventh, pitched around two errors to keep the Red Raiders from scoring.
Then in Sunday’s game, Teel put in work in the final two innings in the Cowboys’ 11-inning 3-1 victory over the Red Raiders. He worked himself out of jam in the bottom of the 10th inning when the Red Raiders loaded the bases by picking up a force out at the plate and the recording a strikeout to end the inning. Teel then threw a perfect 11th inning to finish the game.
Today, Teel’s award marks the sixth Big 12 weekly award for the Cowboys this season. Along with Teel’s two honors, Garrett Benge has been named the Big 12 Player of the Week twice, while Travis Wacker and Jonathan Heasley have each collected Big 12 Newcomer of the Week honors.
