One of the very best offensive line prospects at the first Texas MegaCamp in Belton, Texas on Saturday night was New Braunfels offensive tackle Weston Wright. We caught up with him after the camp concluded.
BELTON, Texas -- The Texas MegaCamp tour hosted by University of Mary Hardin-Baylor and in one session on Monday morning by Prairie View A&M has moved on through and wrapped up on Monday night at L.D. Bell High School in Hurst, Texas. Oklahoma State will resume their camp schedule on campus on Tuesday with "The Show," a camp for quarterbacks (Gun Show), wide receivers (Freak Show), and defensive backs (No Fly Zone). Special Teams camp is Wednesday, Down and Dirty Linemen camp is Thursday, young kids camp on Friday, junior college camp on Saturday, and another mini-camp on Sunday. In Belton on Saturday night another player that caught our eye and seemed to catch the attention of the offensive line coaches working including Oklahoma State's Josh Henson was New Braunfels tackle Weston Wright. The 6-7, 305 pound Wright ran okay with a 5.6 in the forty and had a good agility drill.
His records show he has improved on his forty and his 5-10-5 agility drill. He lists a 300 pound bench press max, which may be higher now and he has a 415 pound max on the squat.
Watch the video as he had good footwork, really stuck his foot in the ground and had an excellent punch on the bag. His tape shows a pretty solid offensive lineman in power and technique. He was also an eager student which you want to see.
"I learned a lot from Coach (Josh) Henson and the Oregon State offensive line coach," Wright said of his work on the hot, muggy Saturday night. "I learned how to use my hands better and some better techniques for pass protection. Every camp helps in getting better."
Wright has offers from Texas Tech, Rice, UTSA, Army, Air Force, and Brown out of the Ivy League. He told me he is going to camp at OU this week and then finishes up the week at TCU on Friday. He is going to gain more offers, no doubt about it.
Will it be Oklahoma State possibly? I would guess he would be under consideration depending on how some of the offered players out there now like Owen Condon and Jacob Farrell decide on their opportunity to be Cowboys.
Wright is confident that New Braunfels will have a good season this fall. They are the Unicorns, and I've always felt you had to be especially tough to play for a school with a mascot like Unicorns.
