Fox Sports reports DB is committed to OSU

Martel Van Zant has apparently made a verbal commitment to Oklahoma State. The Top 100 Texas defensive back, who has been deaf since birth, hasn't allowed that challenge to keep him from being a standout on the field and in the classroom.

Friday night, Fox Sports Southwest reported on its high school highlights show that Tyler Lee High School defensive back Martel Van Zant had committed to Oklahoma State. I spoke to Van Zant's father Andre earlier this week and he led me to believe that Martel was leaning toward Oklahoma State.

"He used to be a running back and Barry Sanders was his favorite and that is how he became an Oklahoma State fan," said Andre Van Zant. "I really think when he makes his decision it will be to Oklahoma State."

Van Zant is a 6-foot 2-inch 1/2, 211-pound cornerback that really projects in college as a safety or outside linebacker. He has 4.5 speed and hits like a bulldozer. Van Zant is a special individual in that he is deaf and has been deaf since birth. Because his parents never allowed him to settle for not accomplishing, but urged him instead to do whatever he wanted, he has become an outstanding athlete and student that is looking to major in engineering.

Van Zant came for an unofficial visit to Oklahoma State for the Wyoming game and he and his family, which also includes a talented little brother that plays wide receiver at Tyler Lee, were assured that Martel would receive plenty of help with the use of sign language in every class and in the academic center and a sign language specialist at football practice, meetings and games.

Van Zant, who is rated as a Top 100 Texas prospect helped his team to a win Friday in a battle of the unbeatens and highly ranked schools as Tyler Lee upended Waco High. Van Zant was being recruited by Texas A&M, Colorado, Notre Dame, SMU, and BYU among others.

Below is an updated list of the Oklahoma State commitments, which number 12. Alonzo Pena is a transfer from Georgia Tech that is already on campus and is practicing while sitting out his transfer year.
