IVAN MCFARLIN Q&A

Q. Did you imagine the team being this good? A.I didn‚t think so at first. I thought it was gonna be a team that was going to rebuild. We would get some new players and let the whole team get acquainted to the style of offense and the way we play defense. Everybody gelled together and stepped up to the challenge. Everything has gone really well.

Everything has gone really well. You have become more explosive on offense. What has changed about your game? A.I have developed my perimeter game. I was already a pretty good re-bounder and pretty good inside. I needed to work on ball handling, shooting the ball and just the basic things, the fundamentals. I need to continue to do the things that will make me better.

Q. What has John Lucas brought to this team since joining it this past summer? A. Working with John is just great because I‚m playing with a guy who just knows the game. He‚s a point guard so he knows what places to be at. He‚s a great shooter, but he always thinks pass before shoot. I think the whole team has really gelled playing with him. I think that was the big key that we needed this year.

Q. You have already won 20 games. How far can this team go? A. We can go far as long as we don‚t make mistakes and not get complacent. We have to take each day and say, „We‚ve got to work hard and don‚t have no let downs.‰ We have to take each game one at a time, and just play hard each game we have. We can‚t get loose or flat or anything to let them sneak up and win.

Q. You‚ve already said you are going to come back next year. Was that a hard decision to make? A. I don‚t think it was a hard decision. I just think it‚s one more year to work on my overall game. Hopefully I will get better and have a chance to make it. I think that I‚m getting better, and I just need to work on some things and have an overall better package. I think I am getting better each day.

Q. It has been reported that coach Sutton‚s big goal is to win the Big 12 championship. Do you agree with that or do you think there are bigger goals in mind? A. I think they are bigger goals in mind. Just for now, he wants to win the Big 12 and not really focus on other tournaments. He just wants to focus on the conference right now because the conference ain‚t over. We still have games left. We‚ve got to take every game like it‚s the last game and play hard. We have to play hard, hopefully win and then come back to practice and correct the things we did wrong so we will hopefully not make the same mistakes in the next game.

Q. What is your biggest weakness on the court? A.Well, it was my right hand, but I am using my right hand as well. I can‚t really say I have a weakness. I have bettered my shot, so I really don‚t know. I can‚t tell that I have one right now.

Q. Who has been the toughest guy to cover in Big 12 play so far this season? A.Wayne Simien was pretty hard, but to me I think it has been our own big men. I think our big men on the team are the hardest because we play against them every day. They know what you‚re gonna do and everything. I think they are the hardest people I play against. Every time I have been challenged by a big man, I have stepped up.
