Intensity Turned Up Monday Night

Les Miles put the Cowbys through a three and a half hour practice Monday night inside Boone Pickens Stadium. It was a highly intense session that saw plenty of scrimmage work in the form of inside drills and 11 vs. 11 team work.

The offense had success running the football with Vernand Morency back on the practice field. Morency looked like he'd never missed a beat from the end of the 2003 season. He shared carries with Greg Jones and Calvin Roberts, who continues to shine.

The quarterbacks were off limits but Donovan Woods, Al Pena, and Robert Reid worked in the run game as well on various options and keeper plays. It was driving the defense nuts not to be able to plant the quarterbacks with some big hits. That said there were some big blows delivered, several courtesy of Vernon Grant. The defense had to be lectured by Miles to remember that the guys in the white jerseys (offense) were their teammates and to tone down some of the shots they were taking. Not really cheap shots, but not the kind of hits you make on teammates in practice.

Xavier Lawson-Kennedy and Brad Girtman continued to show improvement on the defensive line. Jerry Don Bray was very active at defensive end along with Marque Fountain, and newcomer Maurice Cummings and newly moved Tremayne Standberry showed up well at defensive end.

There weren't a lot of plays in the passing game, but Chijuan Mack continued to impress with his ability to make tough catches against the defense.

The Cowboys will wrap up the first third of spring practice with another closed workout on Wednesday night before taking a break during spring break. The closed workouts are being taken very serious as the coaching staff had support staff monitoring and asking fans to leave the stadium. The next open workout with be Monday, March 22 at 6:10 p.m.
