Oklahoma State Defeats Texas Tech 14-2

STILLWATER, Okla. Oklahoma State broke open a one-run ballgame with a 10-run sixth inning to roll past Texas Tech 14-2 Friday night at Reynolds Stadium.

Centerfielder Keanon Simon provided the big blows in the inning with a two-run double and grand-slam homer, his second round tripper of the year.  

Oklahoma State improved to 32-16 overall and 15-6 in league play, while Texas Tech fell to 32-17 and 12-9 in conference play.    

OSU led 3-2 in the sixth when Mario Matulich led off the inning with a single and advanced to third on a double by Rod Allen off of Tech starter Steven Thomas (3-6). Simon followed with a two-run double down the right field to start the big inning. Back-to-back walks led to a RBI single by Josh Fields that leftfielder Michael Mask misplayed that cleared the bases. Jason Jaramillo was hit by a pitch and Scott Kirby followed with a RBI single to make the score 9-2. Matulich came up with his second hit of the inning to load the bases before Simon?s grand-slam homer made it 13-2.   

The Pokes added another run in the eighth on a RBI single by Chris Gutierrez to close out the scoring in the game.   

Thomas Cowley gave up two runs on five hits in seven innings of work to improve to 5-2 on the year. He struck out three and walked four to improve to 4-0 in Big 12 starts at home.   

Josh Brady hit a bases loaded two-run bloop double in the third to give Tech an early 2-0 lead. The Cowboys came back to tie it in the bottom of the inning and took a 3-2 lead in the fourth on a RBI single by Mario Matulich.   

The 12-run loss was the biggest deficit defeat of the year for Texas Tech.   

The two teams will be back in action in the second game of the series tomorrow night at 7 p.m. Cowboy ace southpaw Spencer Grogan is slated to get the start, while the Red Raiders will counter with lefty Dallas Braden.
