Pokes in the Pros - Elvin Nina

Former OSU pitcher Elvin Nina's dream of reaching the majors is very much alive after it appeared almsot over last year.

The Los Angeles Dodgers recently promoted Nina from Double-A Jacksonville to Triple-A Las Vegas. Nina, 28, went 5-2 with two saves and a 2.50 ERA at Jacksonville.

Elvin Nina, whose fastball reaches 93-to-94 mph, returns to the Pacific Coast League, where he spent two-plus seasons from 2000-02.

In 2003, Nina began the season out of affiliated baseball with Newark of the independent Atlantic League. Late in the season, he signed with the Dodgers and split time between Jacksonville and Single-A Vero Beach.

Nina was a 17th-round draft choice by Oakland in 1997 after spending two seasons at OSU. He was traded by Oakland to the Anaheim Angels in mid-1999.

Nina was a 10-game winner for Triple-A Salt Lake in 2001.

Note: Former OSU pitcher Scott Baker, who began the season in Single-A, has moved up to Minnesota's Triple-A affiliate Rochester. Baker was ranked No. 12 in the minors on Baseball America's Prospect Hot Sheet (July 20).
