Report From The Rose Bowl

Robert was standing outside the Rose Bowl (where the Cowboys were just completing a 45-minute test of the Rose Bowl turf) when he called to give me this report just a few minutes ago.

"You won't believe how absolutely beautiful the Rose Bowl is," Robert said. "It is beautiful and the field is absolutely immaculate."

The Cowboys were heading to dinner and then had a walk-through planned for the ballroom of their hotel this evening. After the walk-through they were going to be going back to their rooms where they would watch the movie of their choosing. They would then gather one last time to have meetings and snacks before checking in for the evening.

Two players – neither of whom are starters – on the Cowboys' two-deep are injured and will not play against UCLA.

As expected, Vernand Morency will start at tailback. In the Cowboys' last three games last season Morency rushed for 555 yards and six touchdowns (vs. Kansas, 269 yards and 3 TDs on 25 carries; vs. Baylor, 227 yards and 1 TD on 32 carries; and vs. Mississippi in the Cotton Bowl, 59 yards and 2 TDs on 15 carries).

"The key for the Cowboys is going to be if they are able to run the ball," Robert said. Expect to see a lot of double tight end formations in which the Cowboys attempt to run the ball right at the young, inexperienced UCLA defensive line. "If OSU can run the football I don't see where they can be beat."

The magic number is around 215 yards. If Morency, Donovan Woods, Greg Jones and the rest of the Cowboys can run for 215 yards than the Cowboys will win.

For those of you unable to make the trip to the Rose Bowl, don't be surprised to see around 6,000-7,000 fans dressed in orange in the stands.
