Daniel Frishkorn got the Black team started after he put Ethan Kyle on his back and ended the match just 46 seconds after it started. This gave the Black team the lead after Derek Stevens recorded a 5-2 decision over Derrick Fleenor.
Ronnie Delk padded the lead for the Black squad with an 8-4 decision over Ryan Davis at 141.
The Orange squad cut into the lead with major decisions by Zack Esposito and Johny Hendricks to make the score 12-11.
The Black team answered, however, by winning the next three matches, which included two falls. Chris Pendleton pinned Bryant Blackmon in 59 seconds, while Jake Rosholt took out Jake Duke in 1:16.
The shocker of the night came at 184 pounds. Clay Kehrer used a takedown late in the second period to propel him over Rusty Blackmon with a 3-1 decision. Blackmon is coming off an NCAA qualifying year as a 197-pounder.
?"Clay Kehrer was determined to win his match,?" head coach John Smith said. "He really wanted to make this team.?"
The heavyweights were the last match of the night. Iowa transfer Steve Mocco wasted little time with Mike Christian dispatching the senior in 1:57.
The winners of each match will be the starters when the Cowboys host Tennessee-Chattanooga and Boise State in a double header inside Gallagher-Iba Arena on Nov. 14. Chattanooga will be the first dual at 2 p.m. and will be followed by Boise State at 4 p.m.
