Gundy Hires New Defensive Line Coach

It has yet to be made official, but Oklahoma State head coach Mike Gundy and new defensive coordinator Vance Bedford have decided on former University of Nebraska defensive ends coach Nelson Barnes to coach the defensive line at Oklahoma State.

Barnes was last a member of the Cornhusker staff under Frank Solich in 2002. Last season Barnes coached for North Dakoa State head coach Craig Bohl, another former Husker assistant. Barnes was in Stillwater over the weekend to interview with Bedford, Gundy and associate head coach Joe DeForest.

Barnes coached defensive line at Nebraska Wesleyan during the 2003 season. He was at Nebraska for six seasons (1997-2002), where he was also credited with being a successful recruiter. His other coaching stops include three years (1994-96) as defensive line coach at the University of Texas, one season (1993) as defensive line coach at Kansas State for Bill Snyder, two seasons (1991-92) as defensive line coach at Western Illinois, and one season (1991) as defensive line coach at Missouri Western State College.

A native of Alvin, Texas, Barnes was a four-year letterman in football at the University of North Texas for coaching great Hayden Fry. Barnes went on to start his coaching career as a graduate assistant at North Texas and eventually coached seven seasons for the Eagles as defensive line and outside linebackers coach.

During his coaching career, he has been a part of nine bowl games with three different schools. He has also been a part of six conference championship teams, including the 1997 Big 12 Championship with Nebraska that went on to lead to a national championship. He has also helped four teams into the NCAA Division I-AA playoffs.

Barnes replaces Oklahoma State assistant Carey Bailey, who had stayed in Stillwater and interviewed for the same job last week with Bedford.

"I was treated fair," said Bailey. "Mike has done a lot for me and I understand that Vance wanted to bring in somebody that he knew real well," added Bailey, who said he would look for a college position or, perhaps, a job with an NFL club.

Barnes is expected to be on the OSU campus later this week.

Despite rumors that the linebackers coaching positon has been filled, Bedford was back in Stillwater to interview a pair of candidates for that job Wednesday afternoon. Expect the position to be filled soon.
