Recruiting: Cowboys at 19 Commitments

The Cowboys stand at 19 verbal commitments with the recent additions (in the last 24 hours) of Houston Washington wide receiver Jeremy Broadway and McKinney, Texas, defensive tackle Lorenzo Jones being critical pickups. Broadway is capable of challenging for playing time immediately. Jones is just what Oklahoma State was looking for in a high school defensive tackle prospect. He is also a strong possibility for playing time as a freshman.

As for the deletions from the commitment list, Lafayette Carencro defensive end Chris Jones was not going to qualify and was going to be a place situation and this staff apparently didn't want to do that. Jones was recruited by Carey Bailey and was wavering after the coaching change.

Jason Cherry was also a Bailey recruit, and I have to think that offensive coordinator Larry Fedora and/or offensive line coach Joe Wickline were familiar with Cherry who graduated at Boca Raton Spanish River in Florida last spring.

The loss of Irving offensive lineman Chris Hall to Texas was regrettable, but predictable. Hall is a good player, but can be replaced. It is important to get Marlon Winn and solidify him. OSU will also look at Joplin, Mo., lineman Andrew Lewis this weekend.

The important names in the coming days and when they will announce their decisions are Vinita offensive lineman Noah Franklin (Thursday or Friday), Dallas Kimball defensive tackle DeMarcus Granger (Sunday), Lewisville Hebron linebacker Alex Odiari (next Tuesday), Denton Ryan safety Ishie Oduegwa (Friday), and Houston Westside all-purpose back R.J. Jackson along with Houston Lamar wide receiver Brandon LaFell (both of whom are likely to announce on Tuesday or signing day).

We are still waiting to hear something from Irving MacArthur safety prospect Brent Nickerson, who visited Texas Tech last weekend.

What about some surprises? Yes, I know of some and there may be more. The final visit weekend will include some prospects who could fill in need positions in the recruiting class. Example, if Granger goes somewhere other than OSU then Georgia Military College defensive tackle Larry Brown becomes the next guy in line.

Losing Arlington Mansfield Summit tailback Kestahn Moore to Florida was unfortunate, but I believe that makes OSU even more attractive for R.J. Jackson, who the Cowboys coveted more anyway. it also means OSU could bring in Jackson, if he commits, and also take Tulsa Washington's Felix Jones, who is visiting Stillwater this weekend. Jones was the Tulsa World Player of the Year.

This class may not get the high ratings from the services but it fills valuable needs. So far, I love the way it is finishing.

On a personal note, the Cowboys are also without a deep snapper on the roster and they get one that should handle that duty for four years in Zach Allen.
