Elliott was dismissed from the team by Gundy for violating team policies. Gundy will not comment about the specific nature of the violations, an athletic department media release stated.
Elliott was allegedly one of the participants in a fight that broke out early Friday morning, Jan. 21, at a party hosted by the Omega Psi Phi fraternity, according to sources who were attending the party. About 30 people were involved in the fight at the White Barn Estate, 2020 E. Lakeview, according to a story in The O'Collegian on Jan. 25, 2005.
"About 12:30 I saw Prentiss and some others yelling stuff at each other," said a witness, who did not want to be identified. "I yelled, ‘Elliott, no, no,' and then he just hit the guy. That's what started it and then it just got out of hand."
The witness said that the Stillwater Police Department was called after those involved in the fighting were separated and escorted outside of the White Barn Estate. But then tempers flared again.
"I was watching Elliott and he just walked up and hit the guy in the face," the witness said.
The first Stillwater police officers arrived about that time and reported hearing gunshots fired, but a suspect could not be identified and was not arrested.
Elliott and OSU redshirt freshman Bobby Reid arrived at the party together around midnight, according to the witness. It was shortly after that the trouble began.
"Everybody was having a good time. No less than 30 minutes after the young man walked in that's when the trouble started," the witness said. "I will say that Bobby Reid was not involved in any of the fighting, and had nothing to do with it. As a matter of fact, he was nowhere near it when it started. It's a group called the G-Unit, kids from Tulsa who don't go to Langston and don't go to OSU, who were in the middle of it."
It was not the first time that Elliott and Omega Psi Phi have had problems. All of OSU's African-American fraternities and sororities were banned from hosting parties at the Student Union after numerous fights broke out at a dance on Oct. 2, 2004. Elliott was allegedly involved in that fight.
The 6-foot, 175-pound freshman from Tulsa, Okla., was one of the most exciting players on the team this past season. He was third on the team with 17 pass receptions for 295 yards and four touchdowns during the regular season.
He also took over the punt return duties after Darrent Williams was injured and averaged 11.1 yards per return, including an electrifying 74-yarder for a touchdown against Baylor. Elliott also averaged 28 yards on eight kickoff returns.
Elliott finished the regular season with 745 all-purpose yards, second only to tailback Vernand Morency (1,555 yards). Morency, a junior this past season, announced in January that he was bypassing his senior season to enter the NFL Draft.
In the Cowboys' Alamo Bowl loss to Ohio State, Elliott ran the ball three times on reverses for 39 yards, caught two passes for nine yards and had three returns (two punts for a total of one yard and a kickoff for 15 yards).
Elliott becomes the second player in less than a week to be dismissed from the team by Gundy. Earlier this week the school announced that defensive tackle Brad Girtman had been kicked off the game.
