Football: More Than 40 Show For Junior Day

STILLWATER - The Oklahoma State football staff welcomed more than 40 prospects from Texas and Oklahoma to campus on Saturday for the first Junior Recruiting Day under new head coach Mike Gundy.

More than half of the expected prospects were in Stillwater in time for the two and a half hour practice. Among the early arrivals was linebacker Andrew Lewis of Haltom, Texas. A first team All-District 5-5A selection last season, Lewis has already been offered a scholarship by the Cowboys. He seemed to like what he was seeing Saturday during practice as he watched with Haltom teammates Jeremy Brent and Lee Green, both wide receivers.

The junior day had a heavy Texas flavor with standouts like South Garland defensive back Del Howard and the South Grand Prairie trio of linebacker Deron Fontenot, defensive end Brian Evans and safety Malcolm Williams in the stands at Boone Pickens Stadium. All four players were first team all-district selections as juniors last season.

The Everman, Texas, pair of defensive end Lawrence Alexander (6-2, 220, 4.7) and cornerback Kris Adams (6-0, 170, 4.45) were two more attendees that were all-district in their junior seasons.

A really good looking prospect is linebacker Jeff Bereuter of Irving MacArthur. At 6-3, 235 pounds, he is a strong, physical looking prospect.

The Oklahoma prospects seemed to be late arriving with the state basketball playoffs and other spring sports preventing some of them from arriving until later. Edmond Memorial linebacker Sean Kyle is a 6-2, 200-pounder who just finished in the final four in his weight class in the Oklahoma High School Wrestling Championships. Jenks kicker Steven Woodward is an honorable mention All-State kicker from Jenks who performed well in a national kicking competition recently in Las Vegas, Nev.

Following practice the recruits, which also included a contingent of sophomores-to-be from Northeastern Oklahoma A&M J.C., went on a tour of the facilities, met with OSU coaches, had dinner in the Club Level of Boone Pickens Stadium, and attended the OSU-Texas basketball game.

As of this writing we had not heard if there were any early commitments made by any of the prospects, but it is almost certain that others beside Lewis were extended offers.
