Cowley Leads Cowboys to Upset of Horns

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. — Oklahoma State used a solid pitching performance by Thomas Cowley and roped out 11 hits in a 10-4 win over No. 3 Texas in the opening game of the Big 12 tournament Wednesday morning at the SBC Bricktown Ballpark.

Cowley (10-5) allowed four runs on nine hits in 6.1 innings of work to pick up his tenth win of the season. Scott Richmond came on in relief and pitched 2.2 scoreless innings to close out the game.

With the win Oklahoma State improved to 34-23 and advanced to face the second-seeded Baylor (37-20) Thursday evening at 5 p.m. Baylor defeated Kansas 2-1 on Wednesday.

Texas fell to 43-13 and will face the Jayhawks Thursday morning at 10 a.m.

The Cowboys took a 1-0 lead in the second on a RBI groundout by catcher Matt Clarkson off of Texas starter Adrian Alaniz. OSU added another run in the fourth on a RBI double by Justin Colbert to make it 2-0.

OSU, on the strength of a two-run homer by Adam Carr, put up a three spot in the fifth inning to take a 5-0 lead and knock Alaniz (4-3) out of the game. He allowed five runs on eight hits in 4.1 innings of work with a walk and two strikeouts.

The Longhorns got on the board in the sixth on a two-run homer by catcher Todd Gilfillan to make it 5-2.

The Pokes stormed back with five runs in the seventh to extend the lead to 10-2. OSU scored all of the runs with two outs in the frame led by Mike Hernandez' two run double to left center. The final three runs in the inning came on a bases loaded walk and two wild pitchers by the Longhorn relief staff.

Texas scored two runs in the seventh on a RBI singles by Seth Johnston and Clay Van Hook.

Chris Gutierrez, Adam Carr and Mike Hernandez each led the Pokes with two hits on the day, while Seth Johnston led Texas with three hits.
