Recruiting Profile: Gerald McCoy

Gerald McCoy is almost too good to be true. He's a standout student (3.5 GPA), and a school leader at Oklahoma City Southeast High School. He also happens to be one tremendous defensive tackle prospect.

McCoy is 6-5, 285 pounds and cat quick at 5.0 -- that is very quick for a big man inside. As a junior he garnered Second Team All-State and All-City honors with 61 total tackles, 10 sacks, 15 tackles for losses, and a forced fumble. For his career he has 20 sacks. McCoy is strong with a bench press of 360 and squat of 705, but he is also so quick off the ball that he can use virtually every technique to get off blockers. He is a technician when it comes to getting off blocks.

"My coach (Mike Branch) was a defensive lineman and he's always teaching me new ways to get off blocks, and then I've enjoyed going to camps and working with the college coaches on my technique and how to get better," said McCoy. "Anybody can bull rush, but when you can master all these other techniques then you can really be good."

How good is McCoy? He has offers from 14 major schools and is waiting on six others. The offer list includes Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Kansas, Kansas State, LSU, Iowa State, Miami, USC, Nebraska, Notre Dame, Colorado and Texas Tech. He is waiting on offers from Michigan, Florida State, Florida, Alabama, Virginia Tech, and Ohio State.

McCoy said he isn't camping anywhere this summer unless you count camping in the weight room. Before his junior season he camped at Oklahoma and Oklahoma State. He also attended the junior day at both schools. He has yet to take ACT or SAT, but that should be a formality.
