Cowboys Come Up Short Against Bears

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. — Baylor used a five-run third inning and a solid outing by starter Trey Taylor to defeat Oklahoma State 8-3 in Big 12 tournament action in front of 5,500 fans at the Bricktown Ballpark Thursday night.

The Bears (38-20) advanced to the semifinal round on Saturday, while the Cowboys (34-24) will face Texas on Friday afternoon at 4 p.m. in an elimination game. OSU will be the home team in the contest by virtue of being the visitor in Wednesday's win over the Longhorns.

Taylor allowed three runs, two earned on eight hits in 8.1 innings to improve to 6-5 on the year. He struck out seven and did not walk anybody in the longest outing of his career.

The Cowboys jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first courtesy of a solo homer by Corey Brown, his 13th of the year, and a RBI single by Ty Wright.

Baylor put together a five-run third inning capped off by a three-run double by first baseman Jeff Mandel. The Bears scored the first run on a bases loaded walk that knocked starter Blake Kronkosky out of the game. Catcher Zack Dillon hit a sacrifice fly and the Bears took advantage of a Cowboy fielding error to load the bases and set up Mandel's drive to left.

Kronkosky (2-4) allowed four runs on four hits in two innings of work with two walks and no strikeouts in the losing effort.

Baylor put the game away with a three-run ninth inning. Kevin Russo and Jeff Mandel had RBI doubles to account for two of the runs. Mandel finished 4-for-5 with four RBIs in the win.

Ty Wright had four hits to lead the Cowboys, while Mike Hernandez chipped in with two hits in the loss.
