Cowboys Add Linebacker Justin Gent

Justin Gent, the standout high school linebacker from Irving MacArthur, has verbally committed to Oklahoma State where he will be joining high school teammate Jeff Bereuter. The two have formed an impressive linebacker corps for the Cardinals. Gent is 6-2, 215 pounds and runs a 4.62.

He had more than 100 total tackles as a sophomore with 125 total tackles last season including 11 for losses and five sacks. He also had an interception and caused two fumbles. Bereuter is 6-3, 206 pounds with 4.5 speed.

Gent said it is great that he and Bereuter are going together, but that wasn't a primary factor in his decision.

"It's a great thing that I'll be going up there with somebody I know," said Gent. "He had to make his decision on what was best for him and I had to do the same. It's a good thing."

So why did Gent decide on OSU? By the way Gent was awfully excited when talking about his commitment. That excitement was refreshing in this age of everybody trying to act so cool.

"Two reasons really," said Gent of his decision. "First, it's a great place. I visited on Junior Day and from that first visit I was in love with the school. They offered me on that visit, and since then it's been my top school. I just had to look at some other schools and make sure that Oklahoma State was the right school."

He also explained that OSU linebacker coach Todd Bradford told him that with three starting senior linebackers that there would be the opportunity for a freshman to play right away.

"That's big," said Gent. "I'm very excited about that because that doesn't happen for a freshman linebacker at very many schools."

Gent said he also strongly considered Texas Tech and Kansas State. He said his academics are good. He has a bench press max of 325 pounds and a squat max of 445 pounds. Gent also said he is looking to major in business.

We'll have comments from both players on this latest commitment soon.
