Practice Report 3: Break Out the Pads

The Cowboys wrapped up a long day when they walked off the practice field around 8:30 Saturday night. The day began early Saturday morning when the players and coaches had to report for Media Day from 9-11 a.m. After meeting with members of the press they then followed up with Fan Appreciation Day from 1-3 p.m. (although it lasted longer than that) and then the Cowboys had their the first day of practice in shoulder pads.

Practice was scheduled to start at 4:45 p.m., but was moved back nearly an hour because when 3 p.m. rolled around there were still plenty of Cowboy fans standing in line waiting to get autographs inside Gallagher-Iba Arena. Head coach Mike Gundy made the decision that he and his players would stay until every one of the approximately 6,500 people who showed up for Fan Appreciation Day left satisfied. Thus, several players and Gundy stayed nearly an hour extra signing autographs, prompting the delay of an hour in the start of practice.

The first day of shoulder pads brought a couple of scuffles among offensive and defensive players. Both were quickly broken up, and no one was hurt. Offensive lineman Corey Hilliard got into it with an unidentified defensive player on the far end of the field. And safety Jamie Thompson and running back Greg Gold went at it with Thompson yanking Gold's helmet off.

The Cowboys worked on the short passing game for a good part of the practice session. The only interception came when Jamar Ransom picked off a Bobby Reid pass. The best pass play came when Donovan Woods teamed up with brother D'Juan Woods on a long pass.

There was a scare late in the practice when running back Mike Hamilton went down with what appeared to be an ankle or knee injury. But it turned out to be a cramp and he was back on the field after a few minutes.

"That's just part of his makeup right now," Gundy said of the redshirt freshman. "He has to learn to fight through things like that. They said he cramped and he probably did, but he's got to learn to fight through that. It's just a part of being a mature player."

The Cowboys will return to the practice field at 4:45 p.m. both Sunday and Monday before going twice on Tuesday (10 a.m. & 4:45 p.m.).
