David Martin Named Interim AD

STILLWATER, Okla. - Oklahoma State University announced today that Harry Birdwell has requested he transition out of his duties as athletic director sooner than earlier announced. Effective September 1, Birdwell will assume a new assignment focusing on special projects.

David Martin, senior associate athletic director, will become interim athletic director and assume responsibilities for the day-to-day operations of the department.

When Birdwell announced his resignation in early June, he intended to stay in his AD position until the end of the year. Birdwell said, "My opportunities in the private sector have accelerated faster than I expected so I have asked President Schmidly and the Board of Regents if I could transition sooner than we originally had planned. This also gives the University greater flexibility as it expedites its hiring plans."

OSU System CEO and President David Schmidly said, "We have mutually agreed that this change in assignment is best for Harry and the University. This change allows Harry to focus on his future plans. And, it allows him to help us on important special projects. We appreciate Harry's service to OSU and thank him for what he helped us accomplish in athletics."

Martin, who has been at OSU 22 years, is a highly capable administrator. He twice has served as interim AD at OSU, most recently from July 1993 through August 1995, and served as interim commissioner of the Big 12 Conference from April 1998 to January 1999. "We are fortunate to have someone with Dave's experience and background to guide us during this transition," said Schmidly.

OSU began its national search for a Vice President for Athletic Programs and Director of Intercollegiate Athletics on August 1. The new title reflects the executive responsibilities of the position and the interaction expected with the executive leadership of the University.

"We are accelerating the process to conduct a national search and are very pleased with the level of interest we have received," said Schmidly. "We are moving forward and we are excited about the future of OSU athletics."
