Practice Report 6: Sluggish Morning Workout

Oklahoma State went through a sluggish two hour and 25 minute practice on Tuesday morning as the Cowboys started their first of only three days of two-a-day practices. By NCAA guidelines the Cowboys reported early and have school starting on Monday, Aug. 22, so today, Thursday, and next Tuesday will be the only two-a-day practices of the preseason camp.

Head coach Mike Gundy called the practice sluggish, and said he was hoping for a better practice in the afternoon. One of the major concerns for Gundy in the practice was the number of dropped passes by receivers and tight ends. At one point Gundy had the offense do up-downs because of the dropped balls. Both quarterbacks threw well, with Donovan Woods reversing Monday night's performance in which Bobby Reid had the obvious edge in completed passes. However, both quarterbacks were victims of the drops. The emphasis of the full pad practice with the offense was the short passing game, a series of designed routes to turn short passes into longer gains.

There was a noticeable change in the offensive line as Caleb Noble, a former walk-on and former Dartmouth player, moved into the first unit at right guard, Corey Curtis moved from right guard over to his former position at left guard, and David Koenig moving to second unit. The other members of the first offensive line at this point are left tackle Charlie Johnson, center David Washington, and right tackle Corey Hilliard.

In special teams the squad worked live punt early in the practice with mixed results. Freshman Matt Fodge, who handled all the kicks, got off several boomers but also hit several off the side of his foot.

"We've got a lot of work to do there," said associate head coach and special teams coordinator Joe DeForest. "We need to be more consistent with our punting. Our deep snappers are developing the way we thought, but our punting needs to be better. We have a lot of answers to find on specials team with kickoffs and punt returns."

They will work punts again in the evening session which begins at 4:45 p.m. and is open to the public. The viewing area is marked off on the west end of the practice field and is accessed through a gate in the middle of the west fence of the fields.
