Black Takes Orange In Ranking Dual

STILLWATER -- Oklahoma State wrestling head coach John Smith watched from a neutral position at the scorer's table during Thursday night's Orange-Black ranking matches at Gallagher-Iba Arena. Smith, along with the 1,200 estimated fans, saw some interesting results that Smith said will really help him back in the wrestling room as he prepares to take his team next week to the Omaha Open, the opening tournament of the season.

"It wasn't great, but to be honest it was better than I thought it was going to be," Smith said immediately following the 24-17 win by the Black over the Orange. "I was really impressed with Jared Shelton at 197 and it was good to see the guys I expected to be impressive be just that."

There were two falls and they both came at the end of the evening as Shelton, the backup 197-pounder, pinned Jake Duke. Shelton is a sophomore out of Sand Springs, Okla. Defending NCAA national champion Jake Rosholt didn't wrestle because he suffered a concussion in a workout earlier this week. Rosholt should be good to go for the upcoming NWCA All-Star Match at Gallagher-Iba Arena on Monday, Nov. 21. Rosholt will be joined by 285-pounder Steve Mocco, 165-pounder Johny Hendricks, and 149-pounder Zack Esposito in those matches. All are defending NCAA champs, and Smith said he may hold all four out of the Omaha Open and let them open in the All-Star event.

The other fall came at heavyweight, but not without work as Mocco really had to work to get freshman and two-time Oklahoma high school 6A state champ Jared Rosholt turned over. The future Cowboy heavyweight hung in there tough into the second period with Mocco wrestling primarily on top. It was good work for both wrestlers.

The key weights Thursday night where Smith was looking for answers were 174 pounds and 184 pounds. At 174, Smith has felt that redshirt freshman Brandon Mason of Council Bluffs, Iowa, was going to be the guy. Mason can really wrestle on top but is still learning how to wrestle well on his feet at this level. Mason found his advantage early with a take down of Taylor Hosick. He proceeded to turn Hosick four times, each time being awarded three near fall points. After the 14-0 first period lead, Mason started on the bottom for period two and quickly reversed Hosick for the technical fall.

"He is really good when he is on top," Smith said afterwards. "He'll only improve from here on out."

There were two matches at 184 pounds with Clay Kehrer, the Cowboys returning starter at the weight, needing overtime to pull out a 5-3 decision over Brent Parkey. In the second match at that weight senior Rusty Blackmon used a dominating second period in which he rode Jack Jensen the entire two minutes and earned a pair of two-point near falls for a 8-0 major decision.

"Rusty wrestled well," said Smith. "The three other guys had to pull serious weight to make weight and that took a toll on them. I'll need to see more from all four of those guys because I will take the pulling weight into consideration."

The rest of the night went according to form as there weren't a lot of decisions that the annual ranking matches could change. Zack Esposito was very impressive in working a third period strategy of take down for release to gain a 20-5 technical fall over B.J. Jackson at 149. The defending national champion looked good with a variety of moves, including a trip up for a first period take down and a text book double leg move for a take down in the final period to close out the match.

Blue collar senior Kevin Ward strengthened his hold at 157 pounds with an 8-4 decision over Newly McSpadden. The two wrestlers traded reversals in an action-packed final period with Ward prevailing.
