Recruiting: Lewis Returns From KU

We are listing defensive lineman Jonathan Lewis, a former Kansas State signee and Carrollton (Texas) Newman Smith standout, as an Oklahoma State commitment, primarily because that is what he was saying after his visit to Oklahoma State last weekend. We talked to Lewis on Saturday night after he arrived home from what he says will be his final visit on a trip to Kansas.

"It was all right," Lewis said of his trip to KU. "The players were good guys and Coach Beck (KU's recruiting coach) is a good guy too."

In comparison, we couldn't help but sense Lewis was a little more entusiastic about Oklahoma State. When we asked about his "other school he's considering" his voice picked up.

"I really like it at Oklahoma State," said Lewis. "I know a lot of the players there from playing against them in high school. Coach (Curtis) Luper is really a good guy and I think we've hit it off. I know I need to be happy outside the classroom and football, so that I will be better in the classroom and on the football field and Oklahoma State makes me feel that way."

You should know the story on the 6-4, 290-pounder by now. He was a Texas Top 100 player who was recruited by just about everybody before he tore an ACL in his knee in game eight of his senior season. Many schools dropped off and he signed with Kansas State. He stayed out this fall to qualify academically and finish rehab on his knee. After the coaching change at Kansas State he decided to take another look in recruiting.

"It's really worked out well as the doctor has told me the knee is all the way back," said Lewis. "Not knowing the competition in college, I still want to get better, stronger.

"Coming back in recruiting a second time was good," explained Lewis. "I think that going to a school in January to enroll will give me a more mature sense of what I need to do. The first time in recruiting I was just wanting to go to the best school name I could go to, and now the second time I've looked for the school that fits me best. It's part of being a year older and more mature."

Lewis told us to call him on Tuesday and we will.
