Recruiting: Burton Schedules His Visits

We caught Muskogee (Okla.) High School standout and certain All-Stater Derek Burton who was taking it easy on a Tuesday afternoon. Burton admitted he was taking a break finishing up the semester and getting ready to launch his official visits this weekend.

"I'm going to Tulsa this weekend," said Burton. "Next month (January) I go to Tennessee on the 13th, OU on the 20th, and then finish up at Oklahoma State on the 27th."

Burton played on both sides of the line for the Roughers who made an impressive run in the playoff before bowing out in the most exciting game of the Oklahoma high school season against Mustang in the Class 6A semifinals. Burton had 14 sacks and countless tackles for losses on defense. He was a main reason that Muskogee had so much success on offense. So where does he intend to take his talents in the future?

"I want to go somewhere where I am comfortable," said Burton. "On my visits I really want to get to know the coaching staff and the men that will be coaching me if I go there (offensive or defensive line coaches). I also want to get to know the players because those will be the guys I will be hangin' with for the next four or five years."

What about academics? "That's really important to my parents," added Burton. "It is a big thing to them. I think you can get a good education wherever you go. A diploma is a diploma. I'm not sure what I want to major in ... business, but I need to narrow it down."

The laid back Burton is not a big guy in needing a lot of attention. However, he is getting it as coaches are making regular visits to his school and home.

"They are all coming by every week," said the 6-5, 255-pound Burton, who is extremely quick for a big man. "It's okay (recruiting process) so far, nothing I can't handle."

Burton said he plans on taking all of his visits before he makes a decision, so it will be the Hurricane, Vols, Sooners or Cowboys.
