Recruiting: Oklahoma's Top Junior Prospects

The 2006-07 recruiting season should be a solid year for recruiting in Oklahoma with a special emphasis on wide receivers and defensive backs. That can best be explained because the cycle of the sport has more high school teams following suit with the colleges and running spread offenses that feature more throwing.

The Mustang High School pair of big wide receiver David Balenseifen and ultra-slippery, Wes Welker-type Josh Cooper have been in a successful spread offense for the past two seasons. Cooper is also an unbelievable kick returner. Lawton High's Deon Miller is also a sensational prospect with size and speed.

Muskogee will get plenty of attention from the Division I coaches with three legitimate D-1 prospects in quarterback Rell Lewis, who could also play other positions but accounted for 2,493 yards of offense; Dre Stout, a powerful and speedy running back who rushed for more than 250 yards in the state semifinal against Mustang; and defensive end Jontae Bumpas, who had double digit sacks last season as a junior and learned from playing with Derek Burton.

Austin Box of Enid High School will be one of the most recruited players in the state and already has offers from Oklahoma State and Oklahoma. He is big, fast, and makes lots of plays. As a quarterback he completed 107-of-205 passes for 1,467 yards with 14 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. He also rushed for 815 yards and 13 touchdowns. He is a potential college baseball player, but his best talent may be on defense where he played safety. although he projects as a college linebacker.

The top defensive back prospect will be cornerback Anthony Davis from Class 5A state champion Tulsa East Central. The 6-1 Davis is a big corner who tied for the lead in the state with 12 interceptions last season, including four in the final two playoff wins for East Central. He had 44 tackles as a junior and 24 tackles and one interception as a sophomore.
