Recruiting: Chinasa Says It's OSU

Standout defensive end Ugo Chinasa of Richardson (Berkner), Texas, told his high school coach Jim Ledford on Thursday morning that he is going to be an Oklahoma State Cowboy. The 6-6, 230-pound Chinasa was selected as The Dallas Morning News All-Area Defensive Player of the Year after leading Berkner to a 10-0 regular season and into the Class 5A playoffs in Texas. Chinasa chose Oklahoma State in the end over Alabama and Baylor in a very competitive recruiting race.

Coach Ledford said that his star defensive end told him bright and early this morning and that he had already called the final two schools involved and let them know of his decision. He also said that Chinasa would avaliable to elaborate on his decision after he finished his school day at Berkner.

"Ugo has chosen Oklahoma State," said Ledford. "He is a very good player and a really good person. His parents have everything to do with that. We got him later on and hopefully we've added to that."

As a player Chinasa had 96 tackles this season with 11 sacks, six fumbles caused, two fumbles recovered and an intercpetion that he returned for a touchdown. He is rated the 29th-best player in the Southwest, according to, and the 21st best player in Texas, according to The Dallas Morning News. Besides being named the All-Area Defensive Player of the Year he was also named honorable mention All-State by the Associated Press and first-team All-District (10-5A).

Chinasa had a long list of suitors in recruiting including every major school in the Southwest, but he just visited Alabama, Oklahoma State and Baylor before choosing the Cowboys.

OSU linebackers coach Todd Bradford, defensive coordinator Vance Bedford and head coach Mike Gundy were all very involved in the recruitment of Chinasa.
