Hoops Recruiting: Mitchell Likes OSU?

It's been more than a week since Gulf Coast Community College's Jay Mitchell made an official visit to Oklahoma State for the Cowboys' Big Monday showdown with Kansas. Tracking down the 6-foot-7, 225-pound Mitchell has been difficult, but we were able to visit with Gulf Coast head coach Jim Hatfield on Wednesday morning.

Mitchell, a freshman at Gulf Coast from LaGrange, Ga., was averaging 15 points and nearly 10 rebounds a game for the Commodores before suffering a stress fracture in his foot three weeks ago that ended his season.

"He enjoyed (his trip to Oklahoma State) very much. He enjoyed the coaches – Sean (Sutton) and James (Dickey)," Hatfield said. "He was supposed to visit Wisconsin this weekend but he canceled."

Hatfield did say that Mitchell is planning to take a couple more visits but refused to say where or when those are scheduled.

But the Gulf Coast had nothing but good things to say about Mitchell. "He's a team player. He's very versatile. He plays anywhere from the point to the post, from the 1 to the 5 spot," Hatfield said. "He's 6-7 5/8ths. He can post you up, he can pass out of the post and he handles the ball well enough to bring it down (the court) against pressure. He's a very versatile player."

Hatfield believes that Mitchell is best suited to play the small forward position on the Division I level. "His natural player is a 3. Looking at the stats here right now, he averages almost 10 rebounds a game for us, he's second on the team in assists with 110 assists, and he's averaging 15 points."

Mitchell is a freshman and will have three years of eligibility remaining when he transfers. "He was a qualifier out of high school, so he's got three years," Hatfield said. "He's a good student."
