Cowboys Will Play At Miami (Fla.) In NIT

Oklahoma State's men's basketball team – missing out on earning a place in the NCAA Tournament for the first time in nine years – accepted a bid to play in the National Invitation Tournament on Sunday. The Cowboys, 17-15, will play at Miami (Fla.), 16-15, in a first-round game on Wednesday night. Tip-off will be 8 p.m. (Central time).

The Cowboys were awarded a sixth seed in their part of the bracket by the NIT selection committee. . Other schools in the Cowboys' bracket are No. 1 Michigan (18-10), No. 2 Creighton (19-9), No. 3 Miami (Fla), No. 4 Vanderbilt (17-12), No. 5 Notre Dame (15-13), No. 7 Temple (17-14), No. 8 Akron (22-9), No. 9 Texas-El Paso (20-9) and No. 10 Lipscomb (21-10).

If OSU defeats Miami (Fla.) in the first-round game the Cowboys will face either Creighton, Temple or Akron next Monday, March 20. Temple faces Akron in an opening-round game on Tuesday night, with the winner advancing to play at Creighton Friday.

Miami suffered an 80-76 loss to Duke in the ACC Tournament quarterfinals on Friday. The Hurricanes, coached by Frank Haith, were 10-5 in home games this season – losing to Florida (77-67), Boston College (65-61), North Carolina State (86-77 in overtime), North Carolina (80-70) and Florida State (67-64) at the BankUnited Center in Coral Gables, Fla.

The Hurricanes are led by 6-2 junior guard Guillermo Diaz, who averages 17.4 points, and 6-2 senior guard Robert Hite (16.4 points and 5.7 rebounds). Anthony Harris, a 6-2 junior guard, is the only other player averaging in double figures with 10.1 points per game. Anthony King, a 6-9 junior post, contributes 8.8 points and a team-high 7.0 rebounds.

"This is the first time we haven't gone to the NCAA Touranment in nine years, and that's what we all hope for and that's what we play for, but there's still a championship to be played for," OSU head coach designate Sean Sutton said. "If we win three games we get a chance to go to New York and play for a championship. It would be a chance for us to play some extra games and hopefully be a time for us to improve and build for next season."

The Cowboys last played in the postseason NIT nine years ago following the 1996-97 season. They defeated Tulane, 79-72, in Stillwater before going on the road and losing at Michigan, 75-65. They have played in the NCAA Tournament the last eight seasons.
