Spring Practice Notes: Day 4

Following the scrimmage on Friday, and during practices the first week, head coach Mike Gundy pointed out several times that he thought sophomore Jacob Lacey was showing up well at cornerback. Lacey was out there playing corner with the first team on the left side Monday, and Calvin Mickens had moved back to free safety.

Mickens is a big corner at 6-2, 185 pounds and it was obvious the Cowboys defensive staff was doing a little experimenting to see if Mickens could help with the depth problem at safety, especially with the uncertainty with the injury to Clint Coe in Friday's scrimmage.

Jeremiah Burton has moved to fullback. The former walk-on linebacker from Enid is being looked at on offense with the Cowboys really having only one fullback in sophomore John Johnson. Burton is a 6-2, 230-pounder who has talent and has been a contributor on special teams. Look for those contributions to continue and maybe Burton has found a home where he can get some playing time.

Clint Coe Out with Knee Injury
Clint Coe was on crutches with a brace on his left knee following a knee injury on Friday. Coe spent most of practice in the training room getting treatment and came out with his father to watch the last 30 minutes of practice. Right now the Cowboys are uncertain of how serious Coe's injury is.

"We don't know yet," Gundy said when asked about Coe. "We should know something on him Friday, but they have said he is probably out at least two weeks right now."

The only other player sitting out practice was offensive lineman Chris Simon. Simon was suited up, but spent his time on the stationary bike and doing rehab related exercises with the strength and conditioning staff. It is unknown what his injury is. Freshman linebacker Donnell Williams suited up in a green jersey and participated in non-contact drills. Williams is coming off an off-season shoulder surgery.

Punt Returns Quartet
For the first time this spring the Cowboys took a look at punt returns on Monday. They basically checked out returners and their ability to avoid the gunners that get down the field first. Wide receiver and speedster Tommy Devereaux, walk-on wide receiver Zac Ross, junior college transfer and standout junior college punt returner Anthony Parks, and the presumed fastest player on the team defensive back Grant Jones took turns catching the punts and showing off their takeoff.

Turf Is Better, Grass Is More Spacious
The Cowboys were on the grass for the first time this spring Monday. Gundy had said he wanted to be on the grass as much as possible. It was presumed the reason was that the grass was better for the players following the total reconstruction of the fields early last summer, but Gundy countered that today when asked saying it is more for space considerations and that the new turf in Boone Pickens Stadium is a better, safer surface.

"I think the field (stadium) is better than grass," said Gundy. "It's a space issue to have practice out here. That turf is better than grass. It is a synthetic turf and doesn't have any slippage and is soft like grass. They did the density rating on it and it was 118. A perfect score is 112-120 and the turf came out 118."
