Cowboys Will Be On The Road In Regional

OKLAHOMA CITY - Just as one local newspaper columnist suggested (Berry Tramel of The Oklahoman), it appeared the NCAA Baseball Tournament Committee let the fourth of four Bedlam meetings decide who would host an NCAA regional. Or did they? The committee, meeting in Indianapolis at the NCAA headquarters, announced Sunday the 16 regional sites for next weekend.

Oklahoma won the game over the Cowboys 21-6 and Sunday Norman appeared as a regional site and Stillwater was denied. Texas and Nebraska were also named as hosts for regionals.

Committee chairperson Larry Templeton claimed the decision did not come down to the late Saturday afternoon game in the Big 12 Tourney, but instead to a previously reported shortage of hotel rooms in Stillwater. Next weekend Stillwater is hosting the National Wrestling Hall of Fame induction ceremonies, an Oklahoma Junior Cattleman's Association summer show, and a Sigma Chi fraternity gathering. As a result OSU had to show hotel rooms available in Tulsa and Oklahoma City along with dorm suites in nearby Bennett Hall as part of the accomodations available.

"It didn't come down to a competition between them (OSU and OU)," said Larry Templeton, the NCAA selection committee chairperson and the athletic director at Mississippi State. "We had a concern about Oklahoma State's site, because of other activities they have going on. For the student-athlete experience, we decided to put it at Oklahoma."

Templeton said the bid sent in by Oklahoma State was honest and upfront about the possibility of teams having to stay outside Stillwater or in university housing.

He also said the committee awarded Texas and Nebraska with sites, then sized up OU and OSU as two more Big 12 options. And neither the Cowboys' three-game, regular-season sweep of the Sooners, nor Oklahoma's Saturday romp was a critical factor.

"At the end of the day," Templeton said, "Stillwater's problems with being able to accommodate teams swung us to Oklahoma."

The committee will now fill in the brackets which will include 1-4 seeds for each of those regionals.

Saturday night's game between Oklahoma State and Oklahoma was between two higher seeded teams that had lost both their previous pool play games in the new format at the Big 12 Tournament.

Where will the Cowboys go? It's impossible to tell with the work of the baseball committee. Sometimes they lean on geographical tendencies and sometimes on the integrity of the bracket. If it is geographical then Fayetteville, Ark. or Houston, Texas, look most likely. If it is bracket in nature, Oklahoma State would be a high number two seed and Malibu, Calif., Corvallis, Ore., or Lexington, Ky., would be more likely with Fayetteville still a possiblity.

That announcement will come at 11:30 a.m. Monday (Central time) on ESPN.

The committee is to be applauded for going away from tradition with schools that did not deserve a regional. For the first time in 16 years LSU will have to play away from home and there is no regional in the state of Florida.
