Season Ends For Cowboys

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (http://www.okstate.com) – For the fourth time this season, Oklahoma State came up on the short end of the scoreboard against Oral Roberts as the Golden Eagles knocked the Cowboys out of the NCAA Fayetteville Regional with a 9-2 win at Baum Stadium on Sunday night.

OSU, ranked 14th and the regional's top seed, finished its season 41-20, while No. 3-seed Oral Roberts improved to 4-0 against the Cowboys in 2006 and 41-14 overall and advanced to this week's Super Regional. The Cowboys' 41 wins were their most in a season since they racked up 42 victories in 2001.

The Golden Eagles jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the third inning against OSU starter Josh Fritsche (2-2). Andy Bouchie's RBI single plated the first run, and Carter McQuigg added a two-run single later in the inning.

In the fourth, ORU plated another run, this one provided by a Jake Kahaulelio double that scored Tim Torres from first base.

OSU scored its lone runs in the bottom of the fourth against ORU starter Chance Chapman. The Cowboys loaded the bases with no outs, and Shelby Ford and Jordy Mercer both connected on RBI singles to make the score 4-2.

However, Erik Crichton came out of the ORU bullpen and kept the Cowboys from scoring again, ending the rally by getting Corey Brown to ground into an inning-ending double play.

With OSU still trailing 4-2 after seven innings, Oral Roberts put the game out of reach with four runs in the eighth. Bouchie collected another RBI single for the first run, and Chad Rothford provided the big blow with a three-run home run off Cowboy reliever Jordy Mercer.

Rothford, who was 1-for-3 on Sunday, was named the tourney's Most Outstanding Player, and Crichton picked up the win to improve to 5-0.

Earning All-Regional Tournament honors for OSU were catcher Matt Clarkson, designated hitter Adam Carr, left fielder Ty Wright and pitcher Matt Gardner.
