Cowboys Offer Leary

Oklahoma State recruited an outstanding defensive back in Tim Atchison of Copperas Cove, Texas, last season. Atchison chose to stay close to home and signed with Baylor, but the Cowboys may end up with another safety from Copperas Cove in Bulldogs senior Joseph Leary.

"Yes, I've been offered by Oklahoma State and Kansas and I'm hearing from Rice, Duke, UTEP, Northwestern, Texas A&M and Baylor," said Leary. "Yes, I'm a good student," referring to the interest from Rice, Duke and Northwestern. "I have a 4.1 GPA on a 5.0 scale and I scored a 990 on the SAT."

Leary, who also runs track and power lifts, says he is enjoying recruiting.

"Yes, I like it," said Leary. "I really enjoy it, talking to the coaches and all that. I haven't visited any schools yet, but Oklahoma State wants me to come up there on my own sometime over the next couple of weeks. I haven't formed any opinions on the schools yet. I'm playing it very straight. I'm undecided on what my timetable will be as to when I commit."

Leary is busy working out this summer and when he isn't working out he says he works for the Copperas Cove coaching staff at the annex where the team works out. Last season he played strong safety and finished with 135 total tackles, four interceptions, three fumbles caused, two fumbles recovered, and six sacks. This season he will move to free safety. He also plays a little on offense at running back.

Leary is 6-0, 175 pounds, and ran a 4.4 in the 40-yard dash at a camp just a couple of weeks ago. He is listed with a 4.5 in the 40. He has a bench press max of 245 pounds, squats 420 pounds, and has a 35-inch vertical jump.
