Cowboy Preseason Camp Notes: Day 7

Other than the final field goal at the end of practice the special teams work included the normal PAT/field goal work with Jason Ricks connecting from 33 and 38 yards and just missing wide left from 45 yards. Bruce Redden hit a PAT and had a 45-yarder partially blocked off the right side.

Much of the work was on kickoff returns including fielding onside kicks, which both units did very well. Returns are live without tackling meaning Grant Jones, Dantrell Savage and Artrell Woods all looked good on their returns.

"Artie Woods and Perrish Cox are two good returners that are going to be here for the next four years," said Gundy. "You also have Grant Jones and Tommy Devereaux. We'll rotate them and that is something we'll decide 10 days out (of the opener)."

Running back Mike Hamilton is still limited with his hamstring injury, but fullback John Johnson was back doing some work in drills, and free safety Clint Coe, who is coming off spring ACL surgery, actually participated in the seven-on-seven drills. That is very impressive.

Freshman defensive tackle Jonathan Lewis and walk-on cornerback Sonji Ketiku both conditioned on the sidelines. Obviously, Jeremy Broadway (dislocated wrist and out for a month) and Anthony Parks (quad) stood on the sidelines, but Gundy said there is encouraging news on Parks.

"Parks injury is not as severe as what we thought," said Gundy. "He is doing much better. We expect him back out there in a week to 10 days."

San Antonio Express-News Big 12 beat writer Tim Griffin was in Stillwater to check on the Cowboys as he continues his own personal Big 12 Skywriters Tour. The Skywriters Tour was when writers and broadcaster toured all the Big Eight and Southwest conference campuses and attend practice and interviewed coaches and players, but has been a dead concept for more than 10 years. Griffin now does his own tour. He has been to Kansas, Kansas State, Missouri and Oklahoma. Griffin, a well-respected media member in the league, said he is picking Oklahoma State to finish fifth in the South Division and has the Cowboys going 6-6 and to a bowl game.
