Week 1 With Vance Bedford

Vance Bedford and the Oklahoma State defensive staff may have the most to prove as most Cowboy experts seemed convinced that the offense will be better but have expressed doubts over the defense. We all know the drill by now. The Cowboys have a deep veteran defensive line, athletic and speedy linebackers that are young, and an overhauled secondary with three different starters from 2005.

Now in the opener Bedford and Co. must game plan against Missouri State with a new staff, so they aren't quite sure what they will get on Saturday. Bedford says it is more important that he knows what he will get from his guys.

"That's every game though," said Bedford. "You tell the players it doesn't matter what the other team does. It is about you. You have no control over them, but you do have control over yourself, if you are going to run to the ball, if you are going to align properly, if you are going to communicate with each other. It is never about the opponent it is always about us because we can't control what they do."

What do you do when you have a new staff and you are trying to game plan for the first game?

"We don't have any feel for what they are going to do at the present time," answered Bedford. "They had a key tight end get injured and one of their tailbacks has been injured and won't be ready for this ballgame. We don't have any idea of what they are going to do, so we have to be ready for everything. What they did when Terry Allen was at Kansas -- four wide receiver, to two backs, to two tight ends. After the first quarter we should have a good idea of what they are going to do and have a game plan ready to go."

So, you are going to have to be ready for everything? "Yes we do," said Bedford. "The best thing about going against our offense is they give us every formation you can think of and that gets us ready for anything we have to go against. I think we are going to be prepared and once we get going I think the kids will be playing fast and hard."

They will have a young quarterback and I know you will want to break him with some pressure, right? "With a young group of linebackers and a young secondary we have to play very vanilla," Bedford said tongue in cheek. "We have to get those guys lined up properly and give ourselves a chance to win. We only have five starters back from last year and our offense has eight, so our offense has to carry us for the first few ballgames."

If you believe that is really the attitude of the fiery Vance Bedford then I have some choice real estate you need to look at out in Gotebo.
