Hoops Recruiting: Anderson Attracts Attention

Junction City, Ark., has never experienced a week like before. The small town of about 800 people located on the Arkansas-Louisiana border has been a hotbed for college coaches making the trip to see James Anderson, who is ranked as the 24th best high school player in the nation by Scout.com. We caught up with Anderson on Thursday afternoon and visited with him about his whirlwind week.

Anderson, a 6-foot-6 small forward who averaged 32 points, 12 rebounds and three assists in earning the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette's Mr. Basketball for 2006, began the week by hosting Oklahoma State head coach Sean Sutton and assistant coach James Dickey on Saturday. The Cowboys were the first to make an in-home visit but they certainly weren't the last.

Others making the trip to Junction City this week have been Arkansas head coach Stan Heath to watch him workout on Monday, Alabama's Mark Gottfried for an in-home visit on Tuesday, and head coach Billy Donovan of Florida for an in-home visit Wednesday. Bill Self of Kansas is scheduled to stop in Friday.

"I was kinda getting tired of (the recruiting) before this, but it's kinda been fun," said the soft-spoken Anderson.

Anderson said the meeting with Sutton and Dickey was beneficial. "I found out a lot about the coaches, the staff, trainers and that type of stuff," he said. "We talked some about the style of play. I like that they play an up-tempo style because that's where I fit in."

Anderson will be making his official visit to Oklahoma State for Homecoming weekend (Oct. 20-22) when the Cowboy football team hosts Texas A&M. Other recruits expected to vist Stillwater that weekend are Tracy Smith of Durham (Mt. Zion Academy), N.C., Mamadou Diarra of Stoneridge Prep in Tarzana, Calif., and Jai Lucas of Houston (Bellaire), Texas.

Anderson, who took an official visit to Arkansas on Labor Day weekend, plans to visit Kansas (Oct. 5-7), Florida (Oct. 12-14) and OSU (20-22) before making his decision. "I plan to make a decision before basketball season starts," he said. "Our first game is Nov. 14."
