Monds, Cowboys Pull Away From Bearkats

David Monds took control of the game in the last few minutes of the first half and added a slam dunk to begin the second half to help Oklahoma State pull away from Sam Houston State for an 86-67 victory on Sunday inside Gallagher-Iba Arena. Monds tied a career-high with 17 points, while Mario Boggan (21), Terrel Harris (18) JamesOn Curry (14) and Obi Muonelo (11) also scored in double figures.

Stat line of the game: David Monds: 6-10 FGs, 1-2 3FGs, 4-6 FTs, 17 points, 7 rebounds, 3 blocked shots, 1 assist.

Player of the game: David Monds played his best game of the young season. The 6-foot-8 senior scored just 20 points in the Cowboys' first three games but tied his career high with 17 while grabbing a team-high seven rebounds and blocking a team-best three shots. His lay up with 1:47 remaining in the first half gave the Cowboys a 30-29 lead, and then his three-pointer from the top of the key in the half's final seconds put them up 35-29.

The game was over when …: Terrel Harris took over early in the second half. The Cowboys had widened a six-point halftime lead to 41-32 in the first four minutes of the second half and then the OSU sophomore took over the game. Curry's basket put OSU up 43-32 and then Harris made a steal and fed Marcus Dove for an alley oop slam dunk which brought down the house. Harris had another steal moments later and fed Curry for a fastbreak lay up. On the Cowboys' next trip down the floor Harris nailed a three-pointer from the top of the key, and then made another steal and fed Curry for another breakaway lay up. In the span of about 1:10 the OSU lead went from nine to 52-32 thanks to Harris.

Quote of the game: "I've always felt that he's got a chance to be a really good player. He's unlike any one player that we've had here in the past. He does some things like Tony Allen. He does some things like Adrian Peterson. Those are big comparisons because those are two great players but I think he's got a chance to be in that category as he gets older. He shows signs now of how explosive he can be at the offensive end." – Sean Sutton on Terrel Harris

Sean Sutton on David Monds: "It's the best he's played. He's capable of playing like this a lot. He's always better when he rebounds the ball. When he's rebounding and he's playing with energy, his offense really picks up. That's one of the things you can look at with him – if he's rebounding, chances are he's going to play well on the offensive end. I was proud of the way he bounced back. He didn't play very well the other night. One of the things that I think's important for him if he's going to have a good year, and for us to have the type of year that we want to have, is he's doing to be consistent from game to game. He can't play a great game like he did today, and have two average ones. It's definitely something he can build on."

Next: 8 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 21, vs. Southern (counts as second-round game of South Padre Island Invitational), at Gallagher-Iba Arena.
