Are Cowboys Heading To Independence Bowl?

STILLWATER - Being in the business as long as I have has allowed me to cultivate quite a few friends in the bowl community. This time of year none of those officials really want to be quoted on the record until bowl selections are official but here is what I discovered thanks to conversations with several bowl officials that are with games tied to the Big 12 Conference.

The Big 12 champion -- Oklahoma (10-2) or Nebraska (9-3) -- will go to the BCS and play in the Fiesta Bowl, possibly against Boise State or LSU.

The Big 12 runner-up -- Oklahoma (10-2) or Nebraska (9-3) -- will play in the Cotton Bowl against Arkansas (10-2), Florida (10-2), Auburn (10-2) or Tennessee (9-3) of the SEC.

Texas A&M (9-3) will go to the Holiday Bowl and play California of the Pac-10.

Texas (9-3) will play in the Alamo Bowl in San Antonio against Iowa (6-6) of the Big 10. This is a huge bonus for the Alamo Bowl as it has never had Texas. They will get a full house with the Longhorns and Hawkeyes and could use this game to regain a corporate sponsor for their game.

Texas Tech (7-5) will go to the Sun Bowl and play either Oregon, Oregon State or UCLA.

Missouri (8-4) will go to the Insight Bowl in Phoenix and play Minnesota (7-5) of the Big 10.

OKLAHOMA STATE (6-6) will go to the Independence Bowl in Shreveport, La. and play Alabama (6-6) of the SEC. This is a matchup that the Independence Bowl folks have had on their board for close to a month. It will be the Cowboys first ever meeting with tradition-rich Alabama.

Kansas State (7-5) will go to the Texas Bowl in Houston and play either Rutgers (10-1), Louisville (10-1) or West Virginia (9-2).

This could change but in the words of one bowl executive, "Something strange would have to happen to cause it to change."
