Cowboys Back At Practice After Finals

STILLWATER - Final exams concluded and students turning Highway 51 into a parking lot on their way out of Stillwater were major happenings Friday in Stillwater. But as the student exodus continued the Oklahoma State Cowboy football team found itself back where the season began.

For the first time since daylight savings time ended early in the season the Cowboys were back on the grass practice fields on the east side of Gallagher-Iba Arena. This is where the season was launched during two-a-days in August. Now as the Cowboys prepare for their date with Alabama in the PetroSun Independence Bowl they are back on the grass fields.

The two-hour, 20-minute practice was in full pads and featured more team work between the offense and defense than it did looks at the Crimson Tide with the help of scout teams. The game plan will gradually be installed over the next four practices in Stillwater before the Cowboys break up for an early Christmas at home next Tuesday. They are scheduled to reconvene in Shreveport on Saturday, Dec. 23, for the final five practices for the Dec. 28 game with Alabama.

A few players like wide receiver Adarius Bowman straggled in late following taking the last of their final exams. Quarterback Bobby Reid looked sharp, as did backup Zac Robinson. Dantrell Savage and Keith Toston took the majority of snaps at running back. The tight ends as a group had a good day with Brandon Pettigrew catching several significant passes. The second-team offense knifed through the second-team defense in a two-minute drill with Toston breaking a 24-yard run and then Robinson hitting tight end Justin Waller for a 23-yard touchdown on the next play.

The best part of the practice was seeing the likes of defensive ends Victor DeGrate, Nathan Peterson and Derrick Burton, and linebackers Rodrick Johnson and Patrick Lavine, wide receiver D'Juan Woods, and cornerback Perrish Cox all participating in practice, most at full speed.

"I ain't played in a long time," said DeGrate, who had a high ankle sprain that held him out of the Baylor, Texas Tech and Oklahoma games at the end of the season. "It's a big thing for me to be able to go full speed out here with my teammates."

The Cowboys will continue practicing in Stillwater on Saturday morning at 11 a.m. Below is a look at the times for all the Cowboys remaining practices in Stillwater and at Independence Bowl Stadium in Shreveport.
