Recruiting: Thomas Looking At Three Schools

Safety prospect James Thomas of LaMarque, Texas, said Monday he was finding it very easy to have a Happy New Year. The 6-1, 180-pounder with 4.5 speed is fresh off a Texas Class 4A Division II state championship after he and his teammates downed Waco 34-14 in the title game. Now he gets to start recruiting in earnest, which he says is really down to three schools.

"I know I'm going to visit Missouri, Arkansas and Oklahoma State," Thomas said when asked where he stood in recruiting. "I'm going to Oklahoma State first on Jan. 12 and then Arkansas on Jan. 19, and then Missouri sometime after that. They are all pretty even with maybe the first two a little ahead."

Thomas said he did see some of the Cowboys in their Independence Bowl win over Alabama and he did see some of Missouri in the Sun Bowl, which they lost in dramatic fashion when Oregon State scored late, went for two and the win and got it.

As for Thomas he said he finished with 115 tackles on the season.

"We had five guys on our defense finish with over 100 tackles," Thomas said feeling pretty impressed with LaMarque's defensive prowess. "I had three interceptions and four fumble recoveries too."

Thomas is a natural safety and he is high on the Cowboys' list. Another area that cannot be underappreciated is that he comes from a winning program that is fresh off a championship. The Cowboys have been bringing in a lot of players lately from that situation, coming off a high school winner, and it appears to be contagious or maybe habits are hard to lose. Winning is one the Cowboys would like to keep around and for that reason and more Thomas is a fit. They get first crack at him with the visit on Jan. 12.
