Recruiting: Higgins Goes With Longhorns

Schertz (Clemens), Texas, defensive tackle Tyrell Higgins had been committed to Oklahoma State since the summer. But when he upstaged and outplayed the Longhorns prize offensive line recruit Aundrey McGaskey of LaMarque in a playoff game, Texas jumped in with both feet, made an offer and Higgins took an official visit to Austin this weekend.

"It was really good and I had a lot of fun," said Higgins, who was hosted on the UT campus by freshman linebacker Sergio Kindle. "I liked it a lot meeting with the coaches and the players. They fed me real good, and, actually, I have committed to Texas."

The 6-3, 255-pound Higgins is an honorable mention All-State selection in Class 4A and has been ranked by several publications. However, recruiting networks have never ranked him higher than two stars. You can expect that to jump as soon as this evening simply because he is now a Longhorn commitment. Higgins is smaller, but projects to eventually play where he has had success in high school at a three technique inside on the defensive line. He was playing a two technique when he blew up LaMarque in the playoffs.

Higgins said he had already text messaged Oklahoma State assistant coach Doug Meacham of his decision to commit to Texas.

"I have the SAT test next weekend and I didn't want to juggle two schools down the final couple of weeks to signing day," explained Higgins. "I didn't think that was fair or that either school would want me to do that. I thought this was more fair to Oklahoma State because after my visit I really thought Texas was the best place for me. I hope they can appreciate that."

In a way this may be best for Oklahoma State. It is very tough for any school to beat Texas head to head on a Texas high school prospect. Very few schools do. Mack Brown and his staff have been getting their pick of the Texas players for the past 5 to 6 years. Oklahoma State will now have to use the time to see if they can find another defensive tackle to its liking before signing day.
