Recruiting: Owens Heading To OSU Saturday

Widely considered as the top prospect in Oklahoma for the 2008 recruiting season is Muskogee wide receiver Jameel Owens. Owens has been a big time performer for the Roughers since his sophomore season when he caught 36 passes for 645 yards and nine touchdowns.

Last season as a junior his numbers fell off because of the injury to starting quarterback Rell Lewis, and Owens actually filled in for Lewis at the quarterback position. Owens is a 6-4, 200-pounder with balzing speed. He already has six scholarship offers.

"I've been offered by Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Texas Tech, Nebraksa, Kansas and Tulsa," Owens said on the phone. "I've got a lot of mail from all those schools and Missouri and Ole Miss. I can't tell you how many schools have sent mail. A bunch."

Owens said he was at Oklahoma's Junior Day last week and he will be in Stillwater for the Cowboys 'Junior Day on Saturday. He is not playing basketball, but he will run track this spring.

"I'm going to take my time with recruiting," said Owens. "I grew up watching OU a lot, but I am going to check out all these schools. I want to take my visits and I don't see myself making an early commitment, even a commitment this summer. I will take my time."

Recruiting in general has been pretty enjoyable so far for Owens.

"It's gone pretty well," he said. "I have no problem with it so far. It's been fun."

Owens is on track to qualify academically. He said his last bench press max was 285 pounds last summer. He has not maxed at squat because of a knee injury, and he has a 35-inch vertical.
