Recruiting: Richards' Fun, Exciting Weekend

Adrian Richards had quite a weekend to remember. First, the Mesquite (Texas) High School receiver caught a pair of touchdown passes Friday night – the first two of his senior season – and then he made the trip to watch Oklahoma State open Big 12 Conference play on Saturday. We caught up with Richards early Sunday evening to visit with the Cowboy commit about his trip to Stillwater.

"It was a pretty good game. I liked the way that Oklahoma State showed perseverance and came back to win," said the 6-3, 190-pound wide receiver prospect. "Even though everything didn't go their way they kept fighting and didn't give up, and came away with the win. Oklahoma State really impressed me."

Richards liked what he saw in the Cowboy passing game, with quarterback Zac Robinson completing 16-of-32 passes for 211 yards and two touchdowns. He also kept a close on the Cowboy receivers, including Adarius Bowman (6 catches for 81 yards) and Dez Bryant (5 receptions for 51 yards). "I can picture myself making some of the plays they were making one of these days," he said.

"Like Coach (Gunter) Brewer was telling me, it's a post-route offense that helps get you ready to go to the next level," said Richards, who was in Stillwater on an unofficial visit. He said that he probably won't take his official visit until after his high school season is completed.

Speaking of his high school season ... Richards had a breakout game Friday night in Mesquite's 42-6 victory over Dallas Carter. Richards had just 12 catches for 115 yards, and had not scored a touchdown, the first three games of his senior season. Against Carter, he had five receptions for 150 yards, including scoring plays of 48 and 54 yards, as Mesquite won (42-6) for the first time this season.

"They tried to play us man-to-man, and that was a mistake," said Richards. "In our earlier games, I've been doubled up and had a really hard time getting open. I'm trying to adjust to the double teams now, and all the holding and grabbing that they're doing. It kinda caught me off guard the first couple of games. I don't know why because I should have been expecting it. But now I'm trying to work through it."

The 48-yard touchdown catch came on a fade route in which Richards got behind the cornerback who was playing press coverage. The second TD pass was on a pass which the Carter safety tipped but Richards was able to maintain his concentration, grab the ball and race into the end zone for the TD.

"It was like, ‘Finally,'" Richards said of reaching the end zone for the first time this season. "It's a big relief, like a monkey has been lifted off my back."
